Although some firms who participate in OCIs have dedicated Healthcare Law practice areas that you may get to work in, the reality is that most aspiring Healthcare lawyers will not land one of these summer clerkships. There are a number of Internships in and around Mississippi and Washington, D.C., which will provide great experience working in Healthcare Law. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Legal Externship
The University of Mississippi School of Law can place students during fall, spring, or summer semesters at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, TN. Contact Hans Sinha for more information. Externships are competitive, so inquire/apply as soon as possible.
University of Mississippi Medical Center Summer Legal Internship
UMMC in Jackson, MS usually reserves space for Ole Miss Law students to intern during the summer months. If you want to intern at UMMC, you will have to reach out to them. North Mississippi Rural Legal Services
North Mississippi Rural Legal Services usually takes interns on a volunteer basis for fall, spring, and summer semesters. Although they are involved in an array of practice areas, Healthcare related issues are among their first priority.
Will handle medicare, medicaid, advance health directives, wills, power of attorney, and nursing home bill of rights cases. Goals: Ensure public benefits rules are applied evenly, and represent clients at SSI, SSDI, Food Stamps administrative hearing on cessation and overpayment, assist client at unemployment hearings, provide community education on medicare, medicaid, wills, power of attorney, and nursing home bill of rights.

Mississippi State Department of Health Internship Program
Alabama Attorney General’s Office
Attorney Generals offices do a variety of legal work in both criminal and civil areas. Most states have a Medicaid Fraud division, which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting allegations of fraud against the state Medicaid program by Medicaid providers. Although they do not come on campus, Ole Miss Law students who have reached out to them have been offered summer internships.
The Attorney General’s Office regularly recruits law students for unpaid summer clerkships from The University of Alabama, Cumberland, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Emory, and Thomas Goode Jones law schools. We also accept resumes from law students at other schools. Each summer the office takes into service approximately 20 law clerks with terms set for the first or last half of the summer or the entire summer. Clerks are assigned to various divisions and receive a broad range of experience.
